Parental Perspective (2) – A Journey of Unwavering Support and Dedication

Abhipsa's Path to Success-  A Parental Perspective

Abhipsa Padhi, currently in Grade 6 at Mayoor Pvt. School, encountered a challenging transition during the pandemic, moving from Kuwait to Abu Dhabi in 2021. COVID-19 restrictions meant online classes for Grades 3 and 4, limiting her exposure. This impacted her development significantly like many other kids. When physical classes resumed in Grade 5 after a two-year gap, struggles in her studies emerged.  After the end of the pandemic, restrictions were eased & physical classes were started. Abhipsa returned to face-to-face learning in Grade 5 after a gap of more than 2 years. During her Grade 5 Half-Yearly examinations, her difficulties in studies became evident.

The Inclusion Team at Mayoor Private School recommended an Educational Psychological Assessment to identify her challenges and cater to her specific needs.  The assessment revealed difficulties in expressive language and below-grade-level comprehension skills. Consequently, Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) along with one-to-one pull-out sessions in school were recommended for her. We decided to enrol Abhipsa into SLT sessions. However, managing the SLT sessions was a challenge for us due to the required time and effort. But thanks to the teachers, the Inclusion team and the SLT sessions were arranged in the school during school hours under the supervision of the Inclusion Team. This relieved a lot of pressure on us. SLT has played a vital role in our daughter’s development. This has helped her in improving her understanding and confidence level. As a result, she has started to communicate in full sentences and also answer reading comprehension on her own.

Apart from Speech Therapy, the unwavering support and guidance from Mayoor's Inclusion Team played a pivotal role in aiding Abhipsa to overcome her challenges. The collaborative effort between the Inclusion Team and subject teachers in devising an Individual Educational Plan (IEP) and fostering a comfortable learning environment proved immensely beneficial.

On November 5th, 2023, Abhipsa not only participated but excelled in the UNIFIED ROBOTICS Competition, delivering a remarkable presentation. The Mayoor team, including Abhipsa and three other students, proudly earned a Gold award for the Best Presentation and a Bronze award in the Technical category.

It was an immensely proud moment, not just for us as parents but for the entire school community. Achieving success as regional winners in such an opportunity supported by teachers, teammates and the inclusion team, was a delightful surprise beyond our expectations. It would never have been possible without the support and guidance from the Inclusion team and the encouragement of the school teachers.

Based on our personal journey, we strongly encourage parents whose children are facing academic challenges to consider early intervention. Acknowledging this reality might be difficult, but trust us, early intervention is crucial in supporting children to overcome obstacles and mould a confident, independent future for them.
