From Struggles to Success: How the OG Approach Changed My Child’s Life
As the parent of a Grade 2 student, I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude for the dedication, involvement, and unwavering support provided by the Inclusion Head and the entire Inclusion team at Mayoor Private School. It is incredibly reassuring and inspiring as a parent to see my child’s growth under the care and guidance of such a compassionate and committed team.
The personalized approach adopted to address my child’s unique needs and abilities has had a truly transformative impact. Initially, we were hesitant about the Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach, as we had been strong advocates of the Montessori method. However, with your guidance in introducing us to this research-based approach and the step-by-step strategies throughout the OG journey, we are thrilled to share that this method has not only won us over but has also far exceeded our expectations.
Three years ago, my child faced significant challenges with literacy. She struggled to identify letters or connect them to sounds, making reading and writing an uphill battle. This changed when she joined Mayoor Private School and was introduced to the structured literacy approach of the Orton-Gillingham (OG) Program through the dedicated Inclusion teacher.
What is the Orton-Gillingham (OG) Approach?
The OG approach is a research-based, structured literacy method that incorporates multisensory techniques, allowing students to learn through seeing, saying, sounding, and writing. This method is especially effective for children with dyslexia or those who struggle with reading. It emphasizes explicit, sequential, systematic, prescriptive, diagnostic, and cumulative instruction, as recommended by the Science of Reading. The OG approach has proven to be transformative for children needing additional support in decoding and encoding words.

From Then to Now: A Remarkable Transformation
When my child first started this journey, she could neither identify letters nor connect them with their sounds. Fast forward three years, and she is now reading at grade level. The progress doesn’t stop there—her writing skills, once a major concern, have improved tremendously. She has advanced from writing basic words to constructing simple sentences that now meet grade-level standards.
This journey hasn’t just been about academics. My child’s overall confidence has grown significantly. She proudly tells us about her school, often jokingly saying, “Why didn’t you enroll me in Mayoor from KG1? I missed it! I would have been in a much better position by now!” Her enthusiasm for learning is now unmistakable, and the use of engaging tools like Raz-Plus and IXL has made her educational experience both enjoyable and effective.

Looking Ahead
As informed by the school, my child has now been moved to Tier 1 and will no longer require an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). This milestone speaks volumes about her progress and the vibrant, meaningful school life she has experienced.
The skills, confidence, and motivation she has gained will undoubtedly serve her well in the years to come. I am deeply appreciative of the patience, hard work, and commitment shown by the team. Thank you for making such a meaningful difference in our lives, and I look forward to continuing this collaborative journey to support my child’s continued success.
